Spontaneous compactification in 2D induced quantum gravity

Spontaneous compactification —on a R × S background— in 2D induced quantum gravity (considered as a toy model for more fundamental quantum gravity) is analyzed in the gauge-independent effective action formalism. It is shown that such compactification is stable, in contradistinction to multidimensional quantum gravity on a R×S (D > 2) background —which is known to be one-loop unstable. On leave...

Polygon model from first-order gravity

The gauge fixed polygon model of 2 + 1 gravity with zero cosmological constant and arbitrary number of spinless point particles is reconstructed from the firstorder formalism of the theory in terms of the triad and the spin connection. The induced symplectic structure is calculated and shown to agree with the canonical one in terms of the variables. PACS number: 04.20.Fy

Darboux coordinates for (first order) tetrad gravity

The Hamiltonian form of the Hilbert action in the first order tetrad formalism is examined. We perform a non-linear field redefinition of the canonical variables isolating the part of the spin connection which is canonically conjugate to the tetrad. The geometrical meaning of the constraints written in these new variables is examined.

First Order Born-Infeld Hydrodynamics via Gauge/Gravity Duality

By performing a derivative expansion on a class of boosted Born-Infeld-AdS5 black branes, we study the hydrodynamics of the dual field theory in the spirit of AdS/CFT correspondence. We determine the fluid dynamical stress-energy tensor to first order, and find that the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density conforms to the universal value of 1/4π to all orders of the inverse of the Bo...

Dynamics of First Order Transitions with Gravity Duals

A first order phase transition usually proceeds by nucleating bubbles of the new phase which then rapidly expand. In confining gauge theories with a gravity dual, the deconfined phase is often described by a black hole. If one starts in this phase and lowers the temperature, the usual description of how the phase transition proceeds violates the area theorem. We study the dynamics of this phase...
